Product Description

Celebrating today’s surge of interest in hand crafts, this book introduces new quilters to a simple yet versatile set of techniques that allows them to create sensational quilts entirely by hand. A world-class designer and extraordinarily skilled quilter, Jinny Beyer demonstrates everything from threading a needle to piecing perfect points. Beginning with the basic running stitch, quilters quickly move on to joining two, then four patches, making stars and compasses, setting in pieces, and stitching curves. With each new skill, quilters are invited to begin the next section of a quilt designed especially for beginners—encouraging a “sew-as-you-learn” approach with each of the 10 quilting projects. The quilting stitch is simply and clearly explained, and detailed photographs illustrate how neat, even lines of stitching are achieved.

I just started sewing quilts and thought it'd be much more convenient to piece tops by hand in the train to and from work. This books explains every technique very thoroughly and with very clear and accurate pictures that make it seem extremely simple !At the end of the book, you will find many templates to use for the projects presented in the book.It was a very pleasant surprise to see all the documentation and historic background presented by the author. I love reading the excerpts from old handbooks and their good advice. The photographs of quilts from the 1800's are wonderful, a great representation of the creative genius of the women who sewed them, and at times, very modern! In a way, a celebration of women's artistic ability.I can't wait to get started (on a "tumbling block" quilt!!! big challenge for a beginner).I have to add that I am French and the writer's style is a "plaisir" to read !I gave 5 stars but the styles of the quilts presented (especially the whole "border" isssue) are not my favorite although I have to say Mrs Beyer does give you the means to create whatever you like.
